Quality of Care NL, a partner of Choosing Wisely Canada, is spreading the word about the dangers associated with the unnecessary use of antibiotics in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The World Health Organization has declared that antimicrobial resistance is one of the top 10 global public health threats facing humanity.
Antimicrobial resistance happens when bacteria that cause infections in human-beings become resistant to the drugs used to inhibit them.
Co-Chair of the Provincial Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee, Dr. Peter Daley, indicates there are two factors related to antibiotics and their use that could lead to major health problems down the road.
The unnecessary use of antibiotics is leading to bacterial mutation, making them more resistant. Pharmaceutical companies are not creating new antibiotics, because it isn’t a profitable market says Dr. Daley. “These two factors are leading us to think forward to a day where antibiotics may not be available at all…and people may return to dying of bacterial infections that we have controlled effectively.”
