A deluge the likes of which we haven’t seen since Igor and Matthew is set to pound part of the island.
The system, which is approaching from the Maritimes, will leave snow in central Labrador, between 60 and 120 mm of rain in the Straits, and much higher amounts on the southwest coast of the island.
Meteorologist Justin Boudreau of the Gander Weather Office says rain will fall for 24 to 36 hours.
The southwest coast could see 200 to 300 mm of rain but it’s difficult to pinpoint at this stage. Boudreau says that could end up being 100 to 200 mm, but says that’s still a lot of rain.
If you look back on rain storms of that magnitude, damage and flooding will likely be the result.
If you’re familiar with the flooding in British Columbia, you will recall the term “atmospheric river.” That’s just what this system will create.
Budreau says that’s a fancy term for a mechanism in which the planet takes moisture from the Equator and sends it up to the Poles.
