Eastern Health’s Organ Donation Program is expected to resume before the end of the year after being put on pause back in March due to staffing vacancies.
Over the last three years, there have been a dozen or so deceased donors in this province, but there have not been any organ donations in this province this year.
Eastern Health says organ donation is a complex and time-sensitive process and staff require extensive training under the supervision of an experienced organ donor coordinator to ensure the program meets strict Health Canada requirements.
The health authority says new staff are currently completing the process and the program is expected to resume before the end of the year.
Those interested in donating their organs are encouraged to make their wishes known to their families and next-of-kin.
