One St. John’s city councillor is wondering why they were not included in government’s speed camera pilot project.
Government announced yesterday that speed cams would be set up in Mount Pearl and Paradise, but councilor Carl Ridgeley wonders why St. John’s was left out of the pilot.
He applauds the move to bring in the technology, but wants to know if the capital city ever approached the province about installing speed cameras.
Mayor Danny Breen says the city has been in favour of using speed cameras, but they were not aware of any pilot study.
He says once the city found out a study was being conducted, they met with the province—but Paradise and Mount Pearl had already been selected. Although they’re not participating, Breen says they’ll be paying close attention to the results.

At governments announcement yesterday, Minister of Digital Government and Service NL, Sarah Stoodley said many towns and cities would like to have the automated detection system in speeding hot spots. She says many MHA’s are coming up to her and asking how to get in on the program.
