Tribute was paid in the House of Assembly this past week to mark the 50th anniversary of women being able to take the oath to serve as members of the RCMP.
Troop 17 was made up of 32 women from across the country, three of whom were from Newfoundland and Labrador.
Tribute was paid in the Legislature on Thursday to all female members of the RCMP and in particular, the trailblazers who started it all.
Staff Sergeant Gail Courtney, retired Constable Cheryl LaFosse, retired Inspector Trudy Murray Power and inspector Tracy Edwards were all in attendance in the public gallery as Minister of Women and Gender Equality Pam Parsons stood to recognize them.
“It was their perseverance and dedication that fundamentally changed the RCMP for the better” said Parsons, who also recognized Assistant Commissioner Jennifer Ebert, Commanding Officer of the RCMP in Newfoundland and Labrador.
