The amount of money the provincial government collects from people buying tobacco products has decreased significantly since 2020, while the money collected from those buying vape products is on the rise.
A breakdown of the tax revenue collected from 2020 to 2025 was recently published as an access to information request on the provincial government’s website.
In the 2020-2021 fiscal year, government collected nearly $135-million from the tobacco tax. However, that number has been steadily declining year-over-year and in 2024-2025 just over 57-million in revenue was generated.
Meanwhile, the money government gets from the vapour product tax has been steadily increasing.
The tax was first introduced on New Year’s Day in 2021.
For the first full year it was in effect, from April 2021 to March 2022, $4.6-million was collected. That number has been growing, and last year it resulted in over $7.5-million in revenue.
