Grieg Seafood is postponing construction on one component of its south coast build, and slowing the pace of investment on the primary project. That means nearly 200 jobs are hold—at least for now.
The company has stopped work on the post-smolt building due to the impact of COVID-19.
The virus has had a serious impact on farmed salmon markets including important markets for Grieg, such as the USA. Because of the uncertainty, they’re postponing some of the construction of the land-based operation.
This means construction jobs related to the post-smolt building will be terminated, however, the main pillars of the Newfoundland Farming Project continue on schedule including first fish to market in 2022 or 2023.
The First Feed and Smoltification units have adequate capacity to ensure necessary production as planned for smolt.
The resumption of construction depends on the markets.
