The Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador says his heart is “aching” watching images coming out of Haiti following a devastating earthquake in the country.
A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the nation on Saturday, leaving hundreds dead and more injured.
Before his time as Premier, Andrew Furey founded Team Broken Earth, an initiative that provides medical relief to countries in need with a particular focus on Haiti.
He says he has been helping a coalition of people from the United States coordinate some relief efforts to the country, such as supply shipments.
He says he’s using the contacts he has accumulated over the years through Broken Earth to help make sure everyone in the coalition is on the same page.
Especially when a rural area is hit hard, Furey explains that it is crucial that everyone work with the same direction because if not, then it creates another layer of chaos.
Heartbreaking to see friends and colleagues in Haiti facing more devastation after another earthquake. Residents there have endured so much over the last 11 years. pic.twitter.com/9k9yfIGJel
