A mother is calling for more safety precautions to be put in place at The Loop at Bannerman Park after a graphic incident unfolded involving her young son on New Years Day.
Kaley Hogan says her five-year old son, Sully, is learning how to skate and was with his father and sister at The Loop on New Years Day.
She says her husband was sending her videos of the outing, and she began to notice some increasingly dangerous behavior from other skaters.
She says they were skating very fast and weaving around others, almost knocking her son down.
She told her husband to watch their son closely, then a few minutes later she received a devastating phone call.
She received a frantic phone call from her 14-year-old daughter. She later found out that a group of skaters came rushing by her son, he fell down and one of them skated over his hand and severed his pinky at the knuckle.
She wants to see the city have more of a presence at the loop to monitor things like skater speed, direction, and capacity.
VOCM News has reached out to the city for comment.
