A Pouch Cove man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the repeated sexual abuse of two girls.
The prison term was imposed on 38-year-old Chris Carter this afternoon at Supreme Court in St. John’s.
Carter was sentenced on six counts including sexual assault, sexual interference, exploitation and invitation to sexual touching for offences that occurred over a two-year span from 2018-2021.
But Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court Justice Vikas Khaladkar noted there were likely more than 100 instances of abuse which included all manner of sexual activity.
Carter was sentenced to five years each for the abuse inflicted on each girl, with the judge ordering those sentences to run consecutively, one after the other instead of at the same time.
The victims were in the courtroom today with family, friends and Victim Services staff.
But the girls broke down in tears and had to leave after the total sentence was read aloud.
The judge was initially considering a 12-year sentence but reduced it to 10 years based on the facts that Carter had no previous criminal record and is now considered to be a low risk to re-offend.
The sentence will be reduced by a further 723 days, or about two years, for the time Carter has already spent in custody.
The relationship between the girls and Carter is banned from publication.
