The town of CBS has presented its $47.5 million budget – an increase of approximately $3.2 million over last year.
There is no change in the residential and commercial mil rates, however water and sewer fees will see an increase of $30.
The school rate increases by $5 per student.
The town is making some changes to tax relief programs, including a 25 per cent reduction in property taxes for seniors and families.
The Seniors Property Tax Incentive, has been dropped to comply with provincial legislation. Funding from that program has been redirected to income-based programs.
Residential improvement permit fees and home-based business permit fees are eliminated to promote residential and business growth.
The local fire department, which fought hard to keep the Holyrood and Paddy’s Pond fires from encroaching on properties this summer, has seen a $570,000 budget increase for equipment, training and staffing and to ensure preparedness for wildfire and other emergencies.
Other highlights include $825,000 to reopen the Manuels River Community Centre, hire staff and support programs and events as well as develop a fossil exhibition.
Meanwhile, the tender for the Community Lifestyle Centre is expected to be called in the coming year, with staffing and operational work expected in the latter part of 2026.
$100,000 has also been set aside for a transportation initiative to help support residents with disabilities.
