The Crown and defense gave their closing arguments earlier today in the trial of Stephen Hopkins.
The Crown began by saying that Hopkins committed a “crime of opportunity” and that he took advantage of the alleged victim’s kindness.
However, the Crown notes that Hopkins “met his match” and that the victim “fought and fought and fought until he gave up.”
The Crown noted that while there were some small differences in the testimonies, there were important similarities including the description of the suspect. As well, she notes that Hopkins was found by police nearby and cites the DNA evidence against him.
After a short break, the defense made their closing remarks.
The lawyer appointed by the court to cross-examine the alleged victim began by pointing out some inconsistencies in the woman’s testimony. Then, it was Hopkins’ turn.
He called into question the credibility of the victim’s testimony and the testimony of witnesses.
Hopkins stated that the only evidence linking him to the event is the DNA, but says that evidence is “questionable.”
As well, Hopkins brought up alleged police bias in his case, saying that the RNC did not come down to investigate any offences, but rather to lay a charge of sexual assault.
Justice Donald Burrage will give his decision on the matter at 2 p.m. on Friday. Hopkins had requested not to appear in person on Friday, but rather to appear by video conference. However, the judge stressed the importance of him being there in person.
